JOIN SENATOR FLANAGAN IN FIGHTINGFOR RELIEF AT THE GAS STATION
With skyrocketing gasoline prices putting a strain on New York’s hardworking families and small businesses, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today announced passage of legislation he sponsored that will provide much needed relief at the gas pump by suspending New York State’s gasoline taxes during the summer travel season. The legislation, which has been sent to the Assembly for further action, would eliminate the New York State taxes on gasoline from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. This change would result in an immediate savings of approximately 32 cents per gallon in state gasoline taxes.Senator Flanagan’s tax relief measure also provides local governments with the option of joining with the state to provide greater savings and relief to local drivers by suspending their portion of gasoline taxes. These localities currently collect approximately 14 cents per gallon in sales tax and that relief could be passed on to local drivers. If the Assembly and Governor David Paterson join with the Senate in enacting this tax holiday and the federal and local governments join New York State in providing gasoline price relief, New York drivers would see 65 cents in savings per gallon at the pump.By providing this relief during the high travel months of the summer, Senator Flanagan’s legislation would help families afford to enjoy their summer vacations with their families by traveling through the state. It would also provide an additional incentive to families from out-of-state to visit New York and that would provide a boost to the State’s vital tourism industry. In addition to helping the driving public, Senator Flanagan’s legislation would provide much needed relief to area businesses who provide goods and services throughout New York by lowering their operating costs. That would in turn provide additional relief to New York residents by helping lower prices for consumers. Those benefits would help offset the cost to the state for providing this tax holiday. In addition, to ensure that the savings provided to drivers has minimal impact on the state’s infrastructure, the legislation will include a guarantee of sufficient state resources to fully fund the State’s Dedicated Highway and Bridge Trust Fund."With many families basing their summer plans on the price of gasoline, New York State needs to do whatever it can to provide whatever relief it can. This temporary gasoline tax holiday will provide real relief for our hardworking but overburdened residents without harming state programs," stated Senator Flanagan. "This measure is aimed at giving families - not oil companies - the ability to decide vacation plans and I hope that the Assembly, along with the federal government and local governments across our state, join us in providing this needed relief."CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE FIGHT FOR RELIEF AT THE GAS PUMPS BY CALLING ON THE ASSEMBLY AND GOVERNOR PATERSON TO JOIN THE SENATE IN GIVING YOU A GASOLINE TAX HOLIDAY TO SEND AN E-MAIL TO SENATOR FLANAGAN, PLEASE CLICK HERE.IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE REGULAR UPDATES FROM SENATOR FLANAGAN, PLEASE CLICK HERE.
